New Sauna Aims to Heat Up Vancouver’s Chilly Social Scene
Vancouver’s social scene may have a frosty reputation, but Julia Glynn, co-founder of Kolm Kontrast, hopes to warmly welcome guests to the brand-new sauna and ice bath experience opening on Cambie and 8th this December.
Kolm Kontrast offers more than just a place to sweat. The 50-person sauna features Nordic-style ice baths and a cozy lounge that encourages conversation and connection. Staff are trained to break the ice between guests, creating an inclusive space for wellness enthusiasts.
“We're training our team to recognize people by first name and have one-to-one conversations, and as we get familiar with our regulars' interests to make co-connections,” said Glynn.
The concept taps into a growing demand for communal, holistic wellness. “Canadians are becoming increasingly health conscious,” Glynn said. “There’s nothing more profoundly beneficial for your health than taking a two-minute ice bath.”
Long used by athletes for recovery, ice baths have recently surged in popularity thanks to influencers like Wim Hof, who advocate for their physical and mental benefits. From reducing inflammation to boosting mood and resilience, the practice offers many rewards, especially when shared with others.
Glynn believes the sauna and cold plunge's physical and mental challenges create a bond between users. “The depth of your connection with yourself shapes how deeply you can connect with others,” she said.
Kolm Kontrast's 120-minute after-hours sessions on weekends, between 9 pm and 11 pm, will incorporate fun lighting, music, and an energetic atmosphere. Glynn hopes to encourage the local community to use this space to meet new people and develop real friendships without the need for alcohol.
“It’s a really great sober alternative to get the same sort of lively energy you’d find at a trendy bar but in a way healthier setting,” Glynn said.
Vancouverites can use this as a refuge to escape the cold this winter— except for the ice bath— but an exact opening date has yet to be confirmed. Glynn said she expects to be up and running by mid-December.
